When starting KMail (KDE 3.1) for the first time, the groupware configuration wizard dialog will pop up, giving us the choice between several alternatives as we can see:

At this point if you close the dialog or cancel it by clicking on the Cancel button, KMail will start as the usual KMail application without the Kolab client features and functionalities.
As we will see and describe later in this section of the manual, you still and always have the possibility to enable groupware functionality using the Settings -> Configure option of the KMail menu bar.
The same result is expected if we choose the Disable groupware functions option. In this case you will have to fill your identity and regular mail accounts, before KMail starts.
For now, we will follow the wizard and validate the default options proposed, which are Enable groupware functions and Use standard groupware server settings. Those default options let the wizard configure your Kolab account automatically using the information you enter.
We will have later in this section an overview of the Advanced server setup alternative and present it to you. This option is the more appropriate choice for the user who want to keep control from start.
The next dialog invites us to register our identity:

Just write here the information related to your account, those will be used by KMail to set your identity (profile).
Let us continue the wizard by clicking the Next button, we will now register our Kolab groupware settings:

In the Login: field you have to enter the Login attributed to you for your IMAP server account.
Write your password and the host name of your server in their respective fields, as presented on the screen shot.
If you choose to Store IMAP password in configuration file, you will not be prompted to type the password each time a connection is to be establish with the server.
The Exclude from "Check Mail" option can be useful if you plan to use several accounts ( e.g. a POP3 account) and want to dissociate your IMAP account when checking your regular Mail. This option allows you to Check your Mail individually for each of your accounts
Enable interval checking would automatically Check your Mail at the interval selected.
The next dialog prompt you to choose a language, the choices are English or German.
Just make your choice, click on the Next button and confirm your configuration choices by selecting the Finish button in the Folder Creation dialog.
The Kolab client (enhanced KMail-KOrganizer) is displayed:
