We will now search the address book on our LDAP server to find some contacts and insert those in our Contacts folder.
Push the Lookup Addresses in Directory icon in the Menu Bar of the Address Book Browser to pops up the relevant dialog. The icon is represented by an open book with a "Magnifying glass" on, as you can see on the Address Book Browser view above.
The Search for Addresses in Directory dialog should appear.
Let us have a closer look at its fields and options:
Search for: Enter in this field the Name, Email, or Phone Number, you are searching for (depending of the option selected in the "in" Combo box at the right of this field). You don't need to search the entire Name, Address or Phone Number. If you whish you could for example search for "h" to get all the Name beginning by "h"
Recursive search: This option will enable the search function to look in all directories and their subdirectories.
Add Selected: Push on this button to add the selected address in the list to your Contacts folder.
Mail to Selected: Click this button to send an email to the selected address in the list. A Composer - KMail pre-addressed will pops up.
No need to describe the other buttons which purpose are easy to understand. We will now, search for a contact named "Hansen", to put those facts in practice.
Enter "ha" in the Search for: field and make sure that the Name option is selected in the "in" Combo box on its right. Finally click on the Search button.
After a while you should get a similar view, displaying the list of contacts found on the Kolab server as a result of your search:

N.B: Try to Search without entering anything in the Search for: field. You will get a list with all the Contacts registered on the Kolab server. To use carefully if you expect the server to contain thousands of items.
To Add those Entries to your local Contacts just push the Select All button to highlight the whole list and click on the Add Selected button. Finally close the Search dialog.
Your Address Book Browser should now display the contacts you just have added as shown in the view below:.

In the next chapter we will have an overview about the contacts handling features of KMail in Kolab mode.
