4.4. Contacts Handling - vCards

vCards received as email attachments can be easily added to the user's contact repository. KMail in Kolab mode can also import, export or mail a vCard as attachment.

We will go through those features by running a practical example. Let us proceed as follow in order to cover these cases in a logical way.

Sending a vCard is easy and quick done. Just click on the Contacts icon of your Kolab account to display the Address Book Browser and high light (select) the contact item you want to send. Point then to the File->Mail vCard option of the Address Book Browser Main Menu. A mail will pops up with the vCard attached to it. Just enter the Subject and text in your mail, and send.

Let us now look at User B after she has checked hers mail:

We can see that the vCard has been recognized by KMail in Kolab mode and is nicely displayed at the bottom of the message. Single click on it in order to read it in the vCard Viewer as shown below:

Try and see the Address and Misc pages of the vCard Viewer dialog to see all the information about this contact. Finally close the vCard Viewer.

Right click on the vCard icon at the bottom of your mail and choose the Add To Addressbook option in the context menu, to register the vCard as one of your contacts.

Finally, edit your Address Book Browser by pushing the Contact icon of your Kolab account to see your new contact listed in it:

Other useful features of KMail in Kolab mode are the Import vCard and export vCard functions which can be reached by pointing to the File->Import and File->Export Main Menu items of the Address Book Browser.

More practically the insertion of vCards in your KMail in Kolab mode local Contacts folder can be done by using its Import feature, and equally the Export vCards function allows the user to save a vCards in a directory of hers choice.

Let us follow the procedure to do so, in the following example, we will import some items (vCards) saved in a directory on our system.

Click on the Contacts icon of your Kolab account to edit the Address Book Browser as shown above.

Point to the File->Import->Import vCard option of the Address Book Browser Main Menu to pops up the Select vCard to Import dialog:

We can now select the vCard (*.vcf) file we want to insert in our local Contacts folder and push the OK button to validate our choice. The Edit Contact dialog will be displayed for you to read (or eventually modify) the information contained by this item.

The Contact is now imported and displayed in our Address Book Browser as shown below:

Let us now have a quick overview on how to proceed to export a Contact item.

The procedure is quite simple. We just have to select (high light) the item to be exported in our Address Book Browser and then point to the File->Export->Export vCard 3.0... option of its Main Menu.

A Save As dialog will pops up, just browse to the directory, you want your vCard to be exported to.

Push the Save button of the Save As dialog to validate you choice and execute the Export vCard operation.

You can of course Import or Export the whole list of Contacts by using the Import List... and Export List... options instead, and proceed exactly the same way as described in this chapter.

In the following section of this manual we will describe the KOrganizer features of KMail in Kolab mode.
